Police Seek Suspect In North Austin Bank Robbery Attempt

In third bank robbery incident in recent days, suspect in latest case tried to hold up bank off Interstate 35 but left empty-handed.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police are on the hunt for a suspect who attempted to rob a Wells Fargo Bank branch in North Austin on Tuesday afternoon.

Details on the attempted heist were disclosed at a subsequent police briefing for reporters. The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. at the bank branch located along access road at the 11200 block of North Interstate 35. There, a man entered the bank lobby before passing a note to the teller demanding cash but leaving with no money in hand.

The man is described as standing at five feet, 7 inches tall with a thin build and unshaven face. He was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and dark glasses. Anyone with information as to the identity and/or whereabouts of the suspect are urged to call police at (512) 974-5092.

The incident marked the latest bank robbery incident in a recent string of incidents so far this year. On Jan. 25 at around 10:30 a.m., the Chase Bank branch located at 3317 Northland Dr. was held up. Police said the suspect displayed a note demanding cash before fleeing on foot, leaving with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The day before that, the Chase Bank branch at 9901 N. Lamar Blvd. was held up at around 9:45 a.m. by a suspect with a similar description. The man in that incident displayed a weapon and left a suspicious package behind before fleeing, prompting the police bomb squad to be dispatched toward clearing the scene.

In early January, a suspect robbed the International Bank of Commerce bank branch at 10405 FM 2222, leaving with an undisclosed amount of money. The same suspect is believed to be behind a Dec. 22 bank robbery of another IBC bank branch. Around the same time period, a man entered the Comerica Bank branch along the 1700 block of West 35th St. before displaying a weapon while demanding money. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Late last year, on Dec. 6, 2017, the Wells Fargo bank branch in the 11200 block of North Interstate 35 was held up. The suspect passed a note to a teller demanding cash before fleeing on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Last year also saw a string of bank heists in Austin. On Saturday, Dec. 16, at around 1 p.m., a man entered the Austin Telco Credit Union along the 13800 block of North U.S. Highway 183 northbound service road. He passed a note to the teller demanding money before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
