USA TODAY and other media outlets reported Monday afternoon that veteran Olympic Committee member Dick Pound said that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed, likely to 2021, due to the global coronavirus outbreak.

"On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided," Pound said in a phone interview to USA TODAY. "The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know."

The news comes after Australia and Canada already said they will not compete in Japan. Additionally, the chairman of the British Olympic Association previously said Great Britain would be unlikely to send a team to Tokyo 2020.

On Sunday, the IOC Executive Board announced that it will "step up its scenario-planning for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020."

"A number of critical venues needed for the Games could potentially not be available anymore," the Olympic Committee said in its statement released Sunday. "The situations with millions of nights already booked in hotels is extremely difficult to handle, and all the international sports calendar for at least 33 Olympic sports would have to adapted."
