Delta Airlines Ground Stop Lifted; Delays and Cancellations Continue [UPDATE]

The airline experienced a "major system-wide network outage."

Passengers flying Delta airlines Monday were left stranded across the world due to a system-wide outage that started with a power outage in Atlanta. The company lifted the ground stop around 9 a.m. but warned of significant delays and cancellations.

More than 300 Delta flights have been cancelled as of 10:30 a.m. The company said it had operated over 1,200 of the 6,000 flights scheduled for Monday.

In a statement, the airline said flights scheduled for Monday morning were delayed during the outage while flights that already en route were operating normally.

"We are aware that flight status systems, including airport screens, are incorrectly showing flights on time, the statement said. "We apologize to customers who are affected by this issue, and our teams are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights. Delta has issued a waiver for all passengers traveling between Aug.8 -12.

The airline responded to frustrated customers on Twitter. There is no word on when the outage will be fixed.

Delta offers more than 15,000 flights daily and serves nearly 180 million customers every year, according to its website. Statistics cited by the BBC say the airline is the third largest in the world in terms of passengers.
