Devin P. Kelley, Texas Church Massacre Suspect: 5 Facts

The suspect in the Texas shooting that killed at least 26 was discharged from the Air Force for "bad conduct," according to news reports.

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TX — Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, identified by police as the shooter at Sunday’s Texas church massacre, was an airman discharged for "bad conduct" who had also briefly taught summer Bible school, according to news reports.

Investigators say Kelley opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, first from the outside and then from the inside, about 11:30 Sunday during morning worship services. At least 26 are dead and at least 20 more are injured. Kelley was found dead inside his vehicle on the border between Wilson and Guadalupe counties, but it was not immediately clear if he shot himself or was killed by a resident who pursued him.

Sunday’s mass shooting in the tiny Texas town of about 360 was the deadliest at a place of worship in the United States and the worst mass shooting in Texas history. A motive has not been established.

Here are five facts about the suspected gunman:

1. Kelley's rank was reduced to an E-1 airman when he was discharged from the Air Force in May 2014, CBS reported. He had served in Logistics Readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his discharge, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told The Associated Press. BuzzFeed News reported that Kelley was court-martialed in 2012 for an assault on his wife and their child, and that he was confined for 12 months before his discharge for "bad conduct."

2. Kelley lived in nearby New Braunfels, Texas, and was married, the Daily Beast reported. His mother-in-law listed a post office box in Sutherland Springs as her mailing address.

3. Kelley had posted a photo of an assault weapon on a now-deleted Facebook page, saying in the caption, “She’s a bad bitch,” The Daily Beast said. Witnesses said the shooter was wearing all black and as in “full gear” — including a ballistic vest — when he approached the church with his AR-15 style weapon and fired one shot outside the church, then entered before unloading several rounds of ammunition. CNN reported Kelley bought a Ruger-AR556 rifle in April 2016 from an Academy Sports & Outdoors store in San Antonio. He indicated on required background forms that he didn't have a criminal record that would disqualify him from purchasing the gun according to the report.

4. Kelley had taught Vacation Bible School at Kingsville FBC in June 2013, according to his LinkedIn profile, which appears to have been deactivated. According to the Daily Beast, Kelley wrote that teaching Bible school children ages 4-6 helped “their minds grow and prosper.”

5. Kelley had followed some pages about atheism on Facebook, Heavy.com reported. He also had liked pages on German Shepherds, Glocks and karate, and on his LinkedIn profile had said that he cared about civil and human rights, social action, animal welfare, children, arts and culture, the environment and health, the news site said.

This corrects an earlier version that said Kelley was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force. Instead, he received a "bad conduct discharge."
