The research team over at VerizonSpecials, which is an authorized online retailer of Verizon, set out to find exactly how much leisure time Americans spend on their computers per day.

The online retailer used data from the American Time Use Survey from 2013 to 2017 to determine the average amount of hours of leisure time spent on computers for 48 states across the country.

Residents in Alaska ranked as the top spot for most leisure time spent on their computers at just over 2 hours and 45 minutes every day. On the other end, residents of Delaware had the least amount of time spent looking at computers per day in the country, at just under 45 minutes.

The ATU Survey included all the time spent downloading files, using social media, browsing the web, and other leisurely activities, but excluded such activities as online shopping, banking, and use for work.

The five states with the most leisure time spent on their computers per day were:

  • Alaska: 2:46:38
  • Arkansas: 2:09:00
  • Mississippi: 2:07:12
  • Iowa: 1:52:42
  • Florida: 1:51:00

Alaska's daily computer use comes out to a total of 1,010 hours a year, or 42 days, which is enough time to fly to the moon and back seven times, according to the study. "The top ten fastest marathon times ever recorded are shorter than the time residents of these three states spent on their computer daily," said VerizonSpecials, referring to Alaska, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

The five states with the least amount of leisure time spent on the computer per day were:

  • Delaware: 0:43:48
  • South Dakota: 0:54:36
  • Vermont: 0:56:24
  • North Dakota: 1:07:12
  • Idaho: 1:10:12

The report also found that Americans spend an average of 90 minutes on the computer for leisure purposes a day — meaning that if they worked a national-minimum-wage job for the same amount of time, they would have earned $3,969.38 a year.
