Legislation To Legalize Marijuana Introduced By Senate Dems

The legislation would remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances and propose regulating and taxing it.

WASHINGTON, DC — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is set to introduce legislation that would decriminalize marijuana use at the federal level by removing it from the Controlled Substances Act and offer a plan to regulate and tax it.

A goal of the proposed legislation is to make reparations with communities of color and the poor over the damage done from years of restrictive drug policy, The New York Times reported. The legislation also calls for expunging nonviolent marijuana-related arrests and convictions from federal records.

The legislation will likely face an uphill battle in the Senate where Democrats hold a razor-thin majority. President Joe Biden has not endorsed the bill, and support from moderate Democrats may be unlikely.
