The Mad Dash to Assess Donald Trump's Conflicts of Interest, Suspense Builds Around Appointments and More

Donald Trump's many business ventures have ethicists scrambling to assess potential conflicts of interest, plus more from today's news.

While President-elect Donald Trump is tweeting away between meetings with potential candidates for cabinet positions, ethics lawyers are measuring up the potential conflicts of interests between the impending Trump presidency and his many global business interests.

Although most president-elects sell their businesses or put them in the hands of an independent manager, Trump has refused to do that. Instead, he has put the Trump empire in the hands of his children, including Ivanka Trump, who also sat in on a meeting with the Japanese prime minister last week, raising exactly the kind of conflict of interest questions ethicists are worried about.

“If we’ve got to talk to a foreign government about their behavior, or negotiate a treaty, or some country asks us to send our troops in to defend someone else, we’ve got to make a decision. And the question becomes: Are we going in out of our national interest or because there’s a Trump casino around?” Richard Painter, chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, told The Washington Post.
