President Trump Will Take Home a $1 Salary

In his "60 Minutes" interview following his Election Day win, Trump said, "No, I'm not gonna take the salary. I'm not taking it."

President-elect Donald Trump said he would skip collecting a salary during his time in the White House, insisting in an interview with "60 Minutes" that aired on Sunday, "I'm not taking it," even though he didn't know how much the presidential salary is.

“I think I have to by law take $1, so I'll take $1 a year," said Trump. "But it's a — I don't even know what it is. Do you know what the salary is?”

Interviewer Lesley Stahl informed him that it’s “$400,000 you’re giving up.”

“No, I'm not going to take the salary. I'm not taking it,” he responded.

He promised last year during a campaign appearance in Rochester, New Hampshire, that he would refuse to take a salary as president.

“The first thing I’m going to do is tell you that if I’m elected president, I’m accepting no salary, OK?” Trump said. “That’s not a big deal for me.”

On Federal Election Commission forms, Trump reported 2015 income exceeding $557 million. And according to Forbes, Trump’s wealth is around $3.7 billion — down $800 million from a year ago.

Trump would not be the first American president to forgo a salary while in office. Both John F. Kennedy and Herbert Hoover donated their salaries to charity.

During the interview, Trump once again said he will release his tax returns “at the appropriate time.” During the election, Trump routinely refused to provide his tax returns, claiming he was under an IRS audit while also insisting that voters were not interested in the matter.

“Nobody cares,” he told Stahl. “The only one who cares is, you know, you and a few people that asked that question."

He added: "Obviously, the public didn't care because I won the election very easily. So they don't care. I never thought they did care."
