LOS ANGELES, CA — A little gray kitten is lucky to be alive today thanks to the efforts of an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer who rescued the scared kitty from a precarious perch atop the center divider of the 57 Freeway.

No one knows how the kitten ended up in the middle of 10 lanes of highway, but luck was with the little gray fuzzball when LAPD Sergeant Toscano drove by and spotted him one day last week during rush hour.

Toscano pulled over and carefully made his way over to the cat. Now he’s fostering the kitten until a permanent home can be found for it. The police department has taken to calling the kitten Lucky.

The LAPD tweeted Lucky’s story, instantly drumming up offers of help from LA cat lovers eager to adopt the cat.

“Cold & scared, this kitten sat on top of the center divider,” the LAPD tweeted. “Cars whizzing by on the freeway. LAPD Sergeant Toscano, driving by off-duty, could’ve kept on going — but he didn’t. We think “Lucky” might be a good name for this little one.”

Lucky is the second life forever changed by an LAPD tweet this week. On Friday, an officer recorded the performance of a homeless woman singing opera for passersby at an LA metro station, and within days hundreds of thousands of people had seen the video. Inspired by her voice and her story, generous strangers donated thousands of dollars to help get her back off the street and back into her music career.
