Virginia Beach wastewater facility to turn biogas into power for thousands of homes • Virginia Mercury (virginiamercury.com) — A new $30 million renewable natural gas system at the Virginia Beach HRSD treatment plant will soon turn wastewater biogas into enough energy to power about 5,000 homes, slightly raising bills by roughly 36 cents a month. Developers say capturing and purifying the gas instead of flaring it will cut emissions, and long-term savings from selling environmental credits could eventually return bill credits to local customers.
   

2. Dumpster filled with scrap metal catches on fire at Virginia Beach landfill (wavy.com) — A dumpster full of scrap metal caught fire Tuesday morning at the Virginia Beach City Landfill on Jake Sears Road, but firefighters quickly brought it under control and no one was hurt. Investigators couldn’t pinpoint a cause, but the fire department is using the incident to remind residents to recycle lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries properly at the landfill’s designated drop-off area.
   

3. Virginia Beach plans to establish animal cruelty registry (pilotonline.com) — Virginia Beach is moving toward creating a public animal cruelty registry by early next year, giving shelters and residents another tool to screen potential pet adopters. City leaders also reviewed how Animal Services and the Virginia Beach SPCA care for thousands of animals annually, from adoptions and rabies clinics to a pet pantry and crisis boarding for residents in need.
   

4. Child care worries grow as Virginia Beach provider adapts to changing landscape (wtkr.com) — Families in Virginia Beach relying on specialized child care, like Little Achievers, are feeling the squeeze as state preschool expansions and rising costs pressure traditional providers. A local center serving children with disabilities is adapting by enrolling younger infants and accepting subsidy assistance, but the owner warns other centers are closing or cutting staff as they struggle to stay afloat.
   

5.
