Mizusawa Projected Winner Of VA Republican Primary For U.S. Senate

Bert Mizusawa has won the Republican nomination for Virginia's U.S. Senate seat, setting up a November showdown for one of the state's highest-profile races on the ballot.

The Associated Press called the race for Mizusawa at 7:29 p.m. Mizusawa, a decorated retired Army major general, defeated two other GOP opponents in Tuesday’s primary.

With the primary decided, Mizusawa will advance to the general election, where the Republican nominee will seek to flip the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Mark Warner.

Virginia's U.S. Senate race is expected to be among the state's marquee contests this fall, alongside races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates.

The race is expected to draw national attention as Republicans look to expand their Senate majority and Democrats work to defend a seat they have held for nearly two decades.

Mizusawa, who also holds a law degree, has had a long career that’s included senior military leadership roles, legal and federal contracting work, and positions advising the first Trump campaign and the CIA. He has unsuccessfully run for federal office in Virginia before.

In a statement released shortly after Tuesday night's race call, Mizusawa congratulated his fellow Republican candidates, who he said were "never opponents."

"We campaigned hard across Virginia and thanks to you, we now move on to defeat Senator Mark Warner," he said. "Let's unite Virginians for a big win in November."

Democrats feel confident that Warner, a moderate former governor who was first elected to the Senate in 2008, will win re-election in November. Independent analysts rate the seat as safely blue.

The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
