Amazon Hiring 120,000 Seasonal Workers, Including In Virginia

Many Amazon holiday jobs became permanent in 2016, and the company expects to continue that trend when it hires in Virginia and elsewhere.

WASHINGTON, DC — Amazon is hiring more than 120,000 seasonal workers nationwide, including in Virginia. That means jobs at local fulfillment centers centers — and some of them could become permanent, according to Amazon.

Thousands of holiday positions last year were transitioned to regular, full-time roles after the holidays and the company expects to continue that trend this year, according to a statement from the company.

"We prepare year-round for the holidays and we’re excited to hire for over 120,000 positions this season to help delight our customers,” Dave Clark, Amazon senior vice president of global customer fulfillment, said in a news relase. "We look forward to welcoming back holiday employees who return year-after-year to Amazon and welcome new faces to the team, many of whom will continue on with regular, full-time roles with the company after the holidays."

Amazon has distribution centers in Baltimore and North East in Maryland, while Virginia is among the states vying to become home for the company's second headquarters. Proposals to contend for Amazon's second headquarters are due by Oct. 19, and Fairfax County is getting in on the bidding war. While other spots in the area like Tysons Corner seem like a viable option, the Washington Post reports that officials have passed on Tysons Corner to focus on a different Fairfax County site: Herndon.
