Daily VA Coronavirus Cases Top 1,000; Only 2 New Deaths Reported

VIRGINIA — New daily coronavirus cases reported in Virginia totaled more than 1,000 Sunday as the state's summer surge in new cases shows no signs of slowing down. Statewide, 1,057 additional coronavirus were reported on Sunday, bringing the cumulative total to 77,430 cases. There have been 7,165 total hospitalizations and 2,027 deaths, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

The state has seen a dramatic increase in the number of new coronavirus cases. Only a month ago on June 18, the VDH reported 463 additional cases of the coronavirus and three new deaths. While the number of new daily cases is spiking, the number of reported deaths attributed to COVID-19, the disease attributed to the coronavirus, has been slowing down. The two new deaths reported overnight are the smallest number of deaths reported in one day since April 6.

The surge in new daily cases is occurring in areas of the state outside of Northern Virginia. Jurisdictions in Northern Virginia reported 201 new coronavirus cases Sunday, representing only 19.1 percent of the state total.

With efforts by health officials to combat the coronavirus in the "islands of disadvantage" in the region and a higher rate of mask-wearing by the public in the region compared to other parts of the state, Northern Virginia has witnessed a dramatic turnaround from the early days of the coronavirus when as many as 70 percent of the new daily cases came from the counties and cities that comprise the region.

On Sunday, the new case breakdown in Northern Virginia was seven in Alexandria, seven in Arlington County, 80 in the Fairfax Health District, 51 in Loudoun County, and 56 in the Prince William Health District.

Researchers at the University of Virginia have seen cases surges from mid-June to early July in the health districts of Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Peninsula, Portsmouth, Three Rivers, Virginia Beach and Western Tidewater.

The statewide 7-day average of new cases has increased since July 8, but the same isn't true for the Northern Virginia region by itself. The region, once the epicenter of the crisis in Virginia, has experienced a stable 7-day average of new cases since mid-June.

The latest 7-day average of positive tests in Virginia was 7.6 percent on July 15, the same percentage as the previous day. As of Sunday, 904,423 tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 17,675 tests from Saturday.

Current hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients totaled 1,186 on Sunday, up from 1,166 on Saturday. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 10,017 coronavirus patients have been discharged from Virginia hospitals, up from 9,976 on Saturday.

The COVID-19 hospitalizations include 127 patients on ventilators and 249 in the intensive care units. Among all hospital patients, there are 586 of 2,983 available ventilators being used, or 20 percent. No hospitals report difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies.

• Alexandria: 2,547 cases, 255 hospitalizations, 56 deaths; increase of seven cases.
• Arlington County: 2,733 cases, 430 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of seven cases and three hospitalizations.
• Fairfax County: 14,878 cases, 1,791 hospitalizations, 508 deaths; increase of 80 cases and two hospitalizations.
• Fairfax City: 73 cases, nine hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes.
• Falls Church: 54 cases, 10 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes.
• Loudoun County: 4,647 cases, 317 hospitalizations, 103 deaths; increase of 51 cases.
• Manassas: 1,527 cases, 111 hospitalizations, 20 deaths; increase of six cases.
• Manassas Park: 472 cases, 48 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases.
• Prince William County: 8,152 cases, 725 hospitalizations, 162 deaths; increase of 48 cases, one hospitalization and one death.
• Fredericksburg: 296 cases, 29 hospitalizations, no deaths; increase of two cases.
• Spotsylvania County: 1,148 cases, 85 hospitalizations, 32 deaths; increase of 12 cases.
• Stafford County: 1,119 cases, 110 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of seven cases.
