Fairfax City Ranks In Top 100 Of Fleet Operators For 2022

The City of Fairfax made the list of the top 100 transportation fleet operators in the country for the second time in three years.

FAIRFAX, VA — The City of Fairfax's Fleet Maintenance Division made the list of the top transportation fleet operators in the country for the second time in three years.

NAFA FLEETSolutions magazine’s list of "The 100 Best Fleets in the Americas" ranked Fairfax City at No. 97 in 2022, one spot ahead of its 98th ranking in 2020. The new rankings were announced April 11 at NAFA’s Institute and Expo, held in Columbus, Ohio.

The "100 Best Fleets in the Americas" program has recognized peak-performing fleet operations for more than 20 years, judging fleets based on several criteria, including accountability, use of technology and information, collaboration, creativity, high trust culture, performance recognition, doing it right the first time, quick efficient turnaround, competitive pricing, staff development, and resources stewardship.

The Fleet Management Department for San Bernardino County, California, ranked No. 1 on the 2022 list of best fleets.

Other Virginia fleet operators to make the top 100 list of 2022 were the City of Richmond at No. 7, Prince William County Fleet Management Division at No. 18, Fairfax County Department of Vehicle Services at No. 30, Hanover County at No. 40, City of Norfolk Fleet Management at No. 41, Chesterfield County Fleet Services Division at No. 55, University of Virginia Facilities Management at No. 66 and the City of Alexandria at No. 80.

Fairfax City’s Fleet Maintenance Division maintains a fleet of 708 vehicles and equipment, including a stock of 415 units at the city’s Pickett Road property yard.

With about 22,000 parts in stock, the Fleet Maintenance Division performs nearly all repairs in-house. The shop averages 95 preventative maintenance services each month and 35 air brake inspections, as well as safety and emission inspections and repairs. The fleet team also builds an average of 35 specialized vehicle and equipment customizations each year.

The city’s team of technicians collectively holds 77 National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certifications, including two Master ASE Technicians and one Triple Master Technician, seven Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications, seven Virginia Safety Inspector licenses, and four Department of Environmental inspector licenses.

The shop is recognized by ASE as a Blue Seal of Excellence certified repair facility.
