Fairfax Man Captured In FL After Attacking His Newborn's Mother: Cops

Police said the man abandoned his baby in a pile of snow before fleeing the scene of the attack.

WALTON COUNTY, FL — A Fairfax County man was captured in Florida this week after authorities said he "brutally" attacked his child's mother and abandoned the newborn baby in a pile of snow.

Darvin Flores Caballeros, 20, was arrested Thursday in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on numerous charges stemming from the Feb. 12 assault that occurred in Fairfax County.

According to authorities, Caballeros assaulted and strangled the victim, causing her to drop their 13-day-old infant during the fight. Police said Caballeros fled the scene on foot with the newborn before officers arrived, and a Good Samaritan later found the infant abandoned in a pile of snow.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries after the attack.

Caballeros was taken into custody by Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies after he was spotted leaving an apartment in a vehicle, police said. Deputies stopped the car after confirming Caballeros was a passenger.

Caballeros was taken to the Walton County Jail where he is awaiting extradition back to Virginia. He is charged with malicious wounding, strangulation, two counts of child endangerment, assault and battery on a family member, petit larceny, and an emergency protective order.
