Heat Wave: City of Fairfax Issues Emergency Alert
Extreme caution is urged as temperatures could reach 100 degrees the next several days.

The City of Fairfax issued something of a no-brainer emergency alert Friday about the approaching heat wave during which temperatures are expected to reach near 100 degrees and the heat index even higher until at least next Wednesday.
The city-provided tips include:
- Monitor local radio, TV and on-line services to receive critical weather updates
- Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, community centers and shopping malls
- Postpone outdoor games and activities if possible
- Take frequent breaks if you must be outdoors
- Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat
- Check on your pets frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat
The alert also said all open county buildings are considered cooling stations.
