NoVA Sees Spike In Daily Average Of New Coronavirus Cases

The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,026 new coronavirus cases Monday, lifting the statewide seven-day average to 1,306 cases.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,026 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, lifting the statewide seven-day average to 1,306 cases from an average of 1,289 cases on Sunday.

By region, the new cases on Monday included 311 in the northern region, 286 in the southwest region, 182 in the eastern region, 142 in the central region and 105 in the northwest region, according to the VDH.

Northern Virginia has seen a dramatic increase in the number of new cases reported on a daily basis over the past month. A month ago on Oct. 2, the seven-day average for new cases in the region was 159. On Monday, the seven-day average had climbed to 322 new cases, the highest point since June 11 when the region reported a seven-day average of 324 cases.

The statewide positive average is up to 5.8 percent with 2,663,155 PCR tests completed to date, an increases of 15,496 tests from Sunday. Seven-day averages by region are 9.5 percent in the southwest region, 5.6 percent in the northern region, 5.5 percent in the central region, 4.7 percent in the eastern region, and 3.5 percent in the northwest region.

The seven-day average number of daily new cases per 100,000 residents was 15.3 on Monday, up from 8.8 cases a month ago on Oct. 2.

Total deaths to date in Virginia are up to 3,658, an increase of three from Sunday.

Cumulative hospitalizations stand at 12,674, while the current patient count is 1,031. By region, that includes 285 (seven-day average of 280) in the southwest region, 240 in the northern region (seven-day average of 248), 216 in the central region (seven-day average of 216), 183 in the eastern region (seven-day average of 189), and 114 in the northwest region (seven-day average of 123).

The 1,031 statewide hospitalizations include 97 patients on ventilators and 214 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. As of Monday, ventilator use among all hospital patients stands at 27 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 77 percent occupancy. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

  • Fairfax County: 24,399 cases, 2,290 hospitalizations, 605 deaths; increase of 166 cases and three hospitalizations
  • Fairfax City: 165 cases, 14 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of one case
  • Falls Church: 78 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
  • Loudoun County: 8,048 cases, 488 hospitalizations, 132 deaths; increase of one hospitalization
  • Manassas: 2,065 cases, 132 hospitalizations, 27 deaths; increase of seven cases
  • Manassas Park: 660 cases, 58 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of three cases
