You go to the doctor for an annual check up. You see the dentist twice a year. You should even have your heating and air conditioning system inspected at least once or twice a year.
But what about the structure of your home? Would you spend as little as $50 a year to protect it from wood destroying insects? Termites, carpenter ants, carpenter bees and beetles cause an estimated $5 billion in damage to U.S. homes annually. A through termite inspection can provide some peace of mind, saving you thousands of dollars in repairs.
Pest control professionals are experienced and trained to recognize the signs of damage from wood destroying insects as well as provide safe and effective remediation. While prices for termite inspections vary, ours are less than $50.
Even with a good termite inspection, wet conditions, wood rot and other factors can still lead to damage if you are not on the look out. Fortunately, there are ways for homeowners to watch for the signs of termite damage and then contact a pest control professional to stop an infestation before serious damage occurs.
Consumers have access to some termite treatment products at hardware and other stores. However, this is one area I would recommend leaving to trained and licensed professionals. Termite treatment products are very powerful. Improper application can lead to health and environmental problems. Plus, they may not solve your problem if used incorrectly.
Here are steps you can take:
- Move stored wood away away from structures. Keep it covered and dry.
- Keep mulch from touching the side of the home.
- Grind and remove old stumps.
- Repair wood rot so it does not attract pests.
- Paint and/or stain decks and exposed wood.
- Watch for termite mud tunnels.
- Watch for saw dust on the ground, including inside your home.
- Look for holes, including pin-sized ones, in decks, fences and other wood.
- Repair water damage promptly if you experience a leak.
