Red Light Camera Enforcement Begins Saturday In Fairfax
Fairfax Police will begin enforcement of the latest red light camera locations Saturday. Photographic evidence thus will now be in play.

FAIRFAX, VA — OK, all you folks who treat a traffic light that just turned yellow as an enticement to accelerate in an attempt to beat the dreaded red. You might want to rethink such maneuvering beginning Saturday. That's when Fairfax Police will begin enforcement of the recently installed red light cameras monitoring eastbound and westbound Fairfax Boulevard at Jermantown Road, as well as eastbound Main Street at Woodland Drive.
The enforcement marks the end of the 30-day warning period put into effect following the cameras' installation. Registered owners of vehicles determined to be in violation of the red light will receive notices of fines by mail. Traffic signs indicating that photo red light enforcement is in effect as a safety measure are posted at each of the enforcement locations.

A study released last summer by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that red light camera programs in 79 large U.S. cities saved nearly 1,300 lives through 2014. On the flip side, cities that shut down such programs caused the rate of fatal red-light-running crashes to increase by 30 percent.
