FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A Fairfax woman recently learned that one of the lottery tickets she purchased last September while she was shopping with friends in Maryland was worth $100,000, according to a Maryland Lottery release.

The woman, whom lottery officials identified as an information technology specialist, and her two friends all purchased lottery tickets for the Sept. 5, 2022 drawing, after the Powerball jackpot had rolled to $159 million.

The trio bought their tickets at Harris Teeter #384 located at 323 Copley Place in Gaithersburg, with the Virginia woman spending $15 to purchase five lines of quick-pick numbers and the Power Play multiplier.

The Fairfax woman told lottery officials that she had forgotten all about her tickets until her friends contacted her.

“They called me and said the Harris Teeter has a sign up saying someone won,” the mother of one said, in the release.

After checking her tickets, the woman discovered that she'd won a $50,000 third-tier prize and the Power Play multiplier doubled that to $100,000.

“It’s very encouraging to win,” the woman said, adding that she's putting her winnings in the bank in order to grow her savings.
