FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Tuesday was supposed to be the day when everyone returned to work or school following the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, but Mother Nature had a different plan for Fairfax City residents.

A winter storm warning was in effect to 10 a.m. on Tuesday for most of Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., according to the National Weather Service. While snow is expected to taper off during the morning hours, it will be replaced in some areas by sleet or freezing rain.

As a result, not only did Fairfax County Public Schools cancel classes Tuesday, Fairfax City and Fairfax County offices were opening on a two-hour delay. In addition, all federal offices in the Washington, D.C. area were closed, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
