Snow Storm: State Police Have 1,000 Calls in Less than 5 Hours

Injuries were increasing late as snow continued to fall into the evening, according to the Virginia State Police.

State troopers had fielded 1,000 calls for service between 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Monday night, according to the Virginia State Police.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until noon on Tuesday. Concerns about road conditions in the morning have most schools already closed for Tuesday.

From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Virginia State Police troopers and dispatchers statewide fielded 901 calls for service, most involved vehicle crashes with limited injuries and no fatalities.

But a release noted that an additional 120 traffic crashes had been reported as of 8:30 p.m., and most involved injuries.

The following is a breakdown of calls for service by Virginia State Police from 4:00 p.m.through 8:00 p.m. Monday:

Division II–Culpeper (Fredericksburg/Culpeper/Warrenton/Harrisonburg/Winchester)

  • 50 Traffic Crashes
  • 22 Disabled Vehicles
  • 99 Total Calls for Service

Division VII-Fairfax (Prince William/Loudoun/Arlington/Alexandria/Fairfax)

  • 33 Traffic Crashes
  • 34 Disabled Vehicles
  • 149 Total Calls for Service

Motorists are advised to stay off the highways as snow accumulations will continue to increase during the overnight hours. For their safety, drivers are advised to delay travel until laterTuesday.

  • If having to travel, drivers are reminded to do the following:
  • Add extra time to reach travel destination
  • Slow speed for road conditions
  • Increase driving distances between vehicles for increased stopping distance
  • Buckle up and don’t drive distracted
