Virginia's Coronavirus Cases Start Week Well Below 7-Day Average
The daily increase in new coronavirus cases in Virginia was at its lowest point in two weeks, when 663 new cases were reported.
VIRGINIA — An additional 664 coronavirus cases and four deaths were reported Monday in Virginia. According to the Virginia Department of Health, cumulative cases stand at 113,630, and deaths are up to 2,471. There have been 9,207 hospitalizations to date.
The daily increase in new coronavirus cases was at its lowest point in two weeks, when the VDH reported 663 new cases. The smaller number of new cases on Aug. 24 and Aug. 10 both were reported on a Monday, when numbers are usually lower due to reporting lag.
The 7-day average of new cases was at 887 Monday, down from 897 on Sunday. By region, there were 190 new cases in the northern region, 165 in the eastern region, 117 in the southwest region, 108 in the central region and 84 in the northwest region. Northern Virginia's current 7-day average was at 241 Monday, compared to 187 a month ago.

The number of people hospitalized in Northern Virginia totaled 260 Monday, compared to 218 a month ago. Across the state, COVID-19 hospitalizations totaled 1,127 Monday, a decrease of 28 hospitalizations from Sunday.
Along with the 260 people hospitalized in Northern Virginia, the VDH reported 359 hospitalizations in the eastern region, 250 in the central region, 161 in the southwest region and 97 in the northwest region.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 134 COVID-19 patients were on ventilators and 256 were in intensive care units on Monday. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is 19 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 79 percent, up from 72 percent on Sunday. The 2019 average for ICU occupancy in Virginia was 67 percent.
There have been 14,482 COVID-19 patients discharged from hospitals statewide.
The statewide positive rate of PCR tests was at 6.4 percent on Aug. 20, the most recent figure provided by the VDH. That is down from a peak of 20.8 percent on April 21. As of Monday, 1,479,117 tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 13,084 from Sunday.
Here are the latest case updates for our coverage areas between Sunday and Monday:
- Alexandria: 3,270 cases, 293 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 13 cases and one hospitalization.
- Arlington County: 3,400 cases, 449 hospitalizations, 137 deaths; increase of 17 cases.
- Fairfax County: 17,729 cases, 2,014 hospitalizations, 543 deaths; increase of 82 cases, one hospitalization and one death.
- Fairfax City: 106 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes.
- Falls Church: 64 cases, 10 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes.
- Loudoun County: 5,735 cases, 366 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 23 cases.
- Manassas: 1,758 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 23 deaths; increase of four cases.
- Manassas Park: 552 cases, 52 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of one case.
- Prince William County: 10,392 cases, 836 hospitalizations, 183 deaths; increase of 51 cases and one hospitalization.
- Fredericksburg: 453 cases, 47 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of two cases.
- Spotsylvania County: 1,718 cases, 108 hospitalizations, 37 deaths; increase of 17 cases.
- Stafford County: 1,602 cases, 134 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 13 cases.
