FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Wawa will be hosting a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m., on Thursday, Sept. 1 for the grand opening of its new Fairfax City grocery store and fuel station. Wawa (Store #8671) will be the 100th store in Virginia.

A company spokeswoman told Patch earlier this month that Sept. 1 was the tentative date for the ceremony. But, the Fairfax City Council, which is required to notify residents of any possible public appearances by councilmembers, recently added the Sept. 1 ceremony to its public notice online.

Wawa submitted its application on Jan. 26, 2019 to build a grocery store and fuel station on the site of the former Rodeway Motel at 9700 Fairfax Blvd. The 1.82+ acre property is bordered to the east by the Spring Street.

In order to build the proposed 6,049-square-foot Wawa store and six fuel stations (12 pumps) under a canopy, the applicant needed city approval to change the zoning of the property to commercial retail and obtain a special use permit for the fuel stations, as well as several special exceptions. Once all of those requirements were met, the city council approved the application at a Jan. 14, 2020 public hearing.

One of the proffers Wawa agreed to was to install electric vehicle charging stations on the property. With construction nearly finished, 12 charging stations have been added to the west side of the property.
