Pulaski banjo player Matokie Slaughter made 'Buffalo Gals' her own (wvtf.org) — Floyd County’s Handmade Music School is spotlighting Pulaski banjo great Matokie Slaughter, whose distinctive take on “Buffalo Gals” was captured by Floyd-based County Records in the 1960s. Students are learning her style directly from veteran musician Alice Gerrard while compiling a community songbook that preserves the region’s old-time music and the stories behind it.

Flood Watch Issued for Watauga, Ashe and Wilkes Counties Saturday Through Sunday Evening, Oct. 10-11, 2026 (wataugaonline.com) — Floyd County is under a National Weather Service Flood Watch from Saturday morning through Sunday evening as remnants of Isaias bring 2 to 4 inches of rain, with higher amounts possible. Residents along streams, low-water crossings, and steep slopes should prepare for potential flooding, landslides, and strong winds while monitoring for possible Flood Warnings.

Virginia high school football scores for Oct. 9 (roanoke.com) — Floyd County High School’s football team notched a 24–13 win over Martinsville in Friday night action, standing out among a full slate of Virginia high school scores. Local fans can compare Floyd’s performance with nearby programs like Salem, Radford, and Patrick County to see how regional rivals are shaping up this season.
   

4. Cox, Helen Phillips (nrvnews.com) — A native of Indian Valley in Floyd County, Helen Phillips Cox, 93, has passed away, leaving deep roots that stretch from her Virginia birthplace to her longtime home in Lexington, North Carolina. Family and friends are invited to visitation and funeral services in Lexington next week, followed by a graveside service in Virginia to honor her life of faith and devotion.
