The Civil War Returns to Historic Huntley
During the Civil War, hundreds of Union soldiers camped at
Historic Huntley and its environs, from December 1861 to March 1862. These troops were attached to the four regiments of Richardson’s Brigade: the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th
Michigan, and the 37th New York infantries. Historic Huntley became known as Camp Michigan.
At the same time, tenant farmer George W. Johnson lived at Historic Huntley. Being a Union sympathizer was no protection against theft or damages, as George found out the hard way. After the war he petitioned the
government for $880, reimbursement for losses caused by the soldiers.
