Fort Hunt Safeway Eyes Expansion

County: Company wants to more than double store size

Changes may be coming to the Safeway at Hollin Hall Shopping Center in Fort Hunt.

According to a presentation by Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland at Saturday’s Mount Vernon Town Hall meeting, Safeway is considering tearing down the current store, located at 7900 Fort Hunt Road, and replacing the 20,000-square-foot store with one that covers 51,000 square feet.

The new store would also include underground parking and outdoor seating, according to the presentation. Safeway would also have to apply for rezoning.

Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle said Monday that the company is in talks with the county about the possibility of a new store and cannot release any detailed information at this time.

“Although we have an interest in doing something else with that store, right now we’re simply in discussions with what we might be able to do with the county,” Muckle said. “As terms of square footage, we’re not there yet. In terms of form, we’re not there yet.”

Muckle said any new plans would also include soliciting community input through sources such as neighborhood associations.

“Once we’re done talking with the county, or gotten some feedback from the county in terms of what they will or will not allow us to do, we’ll go to the community and get some feedback,” he said.
