Richmond Highway's Second Fatal Pedestrian Crash Of 2023 Reported

Two of Fairfax County's three pedestrian fatalities in 2023 have happened on Richmond Highway, according to police.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The second pedestrian fatality on Richmond Highway this year was reported Friday, according to Fairfax County Police. Two of Fairfax County's three pedestrian fatalities of 2023 happened on Richmond Highway.

The crash happened around 5:57 a.m. Friday at Richmond Highway and Anderson Lane. Police say a southbound 2008 Chevrolet Impala struck a pedestrian waking outside a crosswalk. The pedestrian was then hit by a southbound 2014 Nissan Altima.

The pedestrian, Phillip Hester, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers remained on the scene. Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors for the drivers in the crash.

This was Fairfax County's third pedestrian fatality of 2023, compared to five at this time in 2022. The other Richmond Highway pedestrian fatality happened in the Groveton area on March 30. The county's third fatality was in Seven Corners on March 24.
