Supervisor Dan Storck Holds Mount Vernon Town Meeting
Officials discussed the revitalization project for the Richmond Highway corridor and other updated.

From Fairfax County: On Saturday, February 2, 2019, Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck hosted the 32nd Annual Town Meeting. With approximately 300 residents and 80 vendors in attendance, and more than 500 watching on live streaming channels, this year’s meeting was again a great opportunity bring the Mount Vernon community together to share information, learn about new services and engage in civic activism. Attendees started the day connecting with community services, educational opportunities, local elected leaders and friends and neighbors. They were treated to the dulcet tones of the Harmony Heritage Singers, special presentations to former Supervisor Gerry Hyland and outgoing Chairman Sharon Bulova, and a flag waving tribute to Federal employees and contractors. The morning was rounded out with remarks from local leaders on the State of Mount Vernon, economic development and revitalization of the Richmond Highway Corridor and updates on District schools and Fort Belvoir.
Supervisor Storck spoke about his vision for improving the quality of life for all Mount Vernon residents, while outlining 2018 District accomplishments and sharing TEAM MVD’s focus for 2019. He highlighted the importance of the $1B + investment coming to the Richmond Highway Corridor and the economic and community revitalization it is bringing. Chairman Sharon Bulova informed the audience about important issues in the County this year and encouraged residents to get involved in community engagement opportunities that will shape the future of the District and the County. County Executive Bryan Hill presented the recently launched County Strategic Planning process and invited community involvement and feedback. Mount Vernon District School Board Member and Board Chair Karen Corbett Sanders highlighted the significant accomplishments of Mount Vernon District students and shared several new school programs. Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Colonel Michael Greenberg shared an update on activities at the Garrison and discussed opportunities for the greater Mount Vernon community to engage with the Fort Belvoir community. Congressmen Gerry Connolly and Don Beyer addressed the audience regarding Federal Government issues.
Throughout the morning, audience members had the opportunity to ask questions of their local leaders and receive direct responses. For the grand finale, Supervisor Storck guided the audience on a virtual tour of the District, highlighting changes across the District ranging from the fully functioning Huntington Levee and transportation improvements to the Original Mount Vernon High School master planning process and the transformation of the former Lorton prison.

Supervisor Storck concluded the Town Meeting by thanking those in attendance, adding, “As we continue our journey 2019, I am inspired and energized by the enthusiasm, engagement and commitment of our community members which is the strength of the Mount Vernon District. Together, we have accomplished a lot and will accomplish more as we grow the Mount Vernon spirit and our connectivity.”
