Suspect in Hannah Graham Disappearance Won't Fight Extradition from Texas

Jesse Matthew appeared before a Galveston County judge Thursday morning, the Galveston County Daily News reports.

Graham is a 2013 graduate of West Potomac High School, where students, faculty and friends held a vigil Wednesday night, according to WTOP.

Matthew appeared before a Galveston County judge Thursday morning via a video conference, dressed in a jail-issued jumpsuit.

Matthew is wanted for abduction with the intent to defile Graham and two counts of Reckless Driving.

Attorney Jim Camblos of Charlottesville has told media outlets he was hired Saturday as Matthew’s attorney. He was the Commonwealth Attorney for Albemarle County for 16 years.

Matthew, a former college football player, was previously a volunteer for a private school’s football team in Charlottesville and is an employee at UVA Hospital. The headmaster of the school sent out a letter to parents saying Matthew would no longer be working with the team “while this matter is being clarified and resolved,” CBS-6 reported. He was suspended without pay from his job as a nursing assistant at UVA Hospital.

Police arrested Matthew in Texas after a resident called police about a man camping on a beach in Gilchrist, just north of Galveston. The area is off of Interstate 10 and is more than an 18-hour drive from Charlottesville.

Matthew was last seen in Charlottesville Saturday afternoon by state and federal officials who were trying to keep tabs on him after he left the city’s police station. He came to the station with family, asking for a lawyer. He left about an hour later without talking to police about Graham. Later that day, police charged him with reckless driving but did not pull him over.

Matthew was the last person seen with Graham, who has been missing since Saturday, Sept. 13.
