The child had been unrestrained in the driver's lap during the four-vehicle crash on Backlick Road, police say.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A 2-year-old child has died from injuries resulting from a July 29 crash in the Springfield area.

The four-vehicle crash happened around 10:40 a.m. on July 29 on Backlick Road near Barta Road. Police say the child was unrestrained in a 2007 Lincoln Town Car driver's lap during the crash. The 2007 Lincoln Town Car struck a traffic signal pole after drifting toward the center median at the Barta Road intersection. The vehicle proceeded into oncoming traffic, sideswiping a 2017 Ford F-150 and crashing head-on with a 2019 Ford F-350. The Ford F-350 rolled backward into a 2018 Mercedes GLE 350.

The driver and child in the Lincoln Town Car and the driver of the F-350 went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The child remained hospitalized and died Wednesday. The drivers were treated and released from the hospital.
