Assaults Up In Franconia District: Police Report

Crimes against property are down, but Franconia had the second most of Fairfax County's police districts in 2017.

Crimes against property are down while assaults and crimes against society up in the Franconia Police District, according to newly-released 2017 crime statistics.

Among Fairfax County's eight police districts, Franconia had the most homicides (six) in 2017, compared to four the year prior. Assaults increased from 1,005 to 1,063 in Franconia, the third highest number among the eight police districts. Kidnapping and sex offenses stayed about the same.

Franconia saw crimes against property decrease from 4,217 to 3,843 due to less crimes like larcenies/thefts, robberies and car thefts. Meanwhile crimes against society, which include drug offenses, pornography offenses and weapon violations, slightly went up from 997 to 1,095. One significant change was drug/narcotics offenses from 884 to 1,006.

Overall the county saw a 1.6 percent decrease in crime in 2017 compared to the year before. "The entire community worked with their police department to achieve these results for 2017," said Police Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. "Community engagement, information sharing, accountability and public trust energize our partnerships that keep Fairfax County the safest jurisdiction of its size in the United States."
