Body Part Found Outside Springfield Home May Just Be Bear Foot

The medical examiner's office originally believed the decomposed body part belonged to a human.

KINGSTOWNE, VA—The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has changed its mind on the partially decomposed foot found in a Springfield backyard last weekend. The medical examiner's office originally estimated the remains belonged to a human but after close investigation say it's likely a bear foot.

Officers has responded to the scene in the 5900 block of Brunswick Street in Springfield Saturday, Jan. 20 after a resident found the body part. The medical examiner's office made the original estimation based on photos sent from the scene.

The body part was sent to the medical examiner for further investigation, where staff determined the remains are likely a bear paw after consulting with an anthropologist.

Detectives had investigated additional yards and have not found human remains. One other yard contained bones, believed to belong to an animal.

The medical examiner's office should know the final results when forensic tests are complete in a few weeks.
