Bus Drivers Sought As Fall Return Nears At Fairfax Schools

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — As Fairfax County Public Schools prepares for a return to five days of in-person learning per week, it needs bus drivers to get the students to school. The school district is hiring bus drivers and will host two upcoming job fairs.

New bus drivers who apply and meet the eligibility requirements can receive a bonus of $2,000. Pay starts at $19.58 per hour, and drivers are eligible for annual step increases and market scale adjustments dependent on Fairfax County School Board approval. Benefits include paid training, six paid holidays, health insurance, life insurance, paid sick leave, and a retirement plan. Applicants can view the salary scales for FCPS here.

Morning shifts are typically from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and afternoon shifts are from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Full-time drivers get a minimum of 30 hours per week. Part-time workers can also receive full-time benefits.

Bus drivers must be at least 21 years old, have five years of driving experience and have a good driving record. Applicants will also pass a physical exam, drug screen, and background check. A commercial driver's license is required with training provided, and drivers complete a five-week training program and road test.

Retirees, college students and career switchers are encouraged to apply, and parents can bring their preschool aged children to work. Many drivers advance to bus driver floater or bus driver supervisor positions or other FCPS positions.
