Coronavirus Case Data By ZIP Code Released In Virginia
The Virginia Department of Health cautions that ZIP code data is not reported for over 400 cases.
VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health has made ZIP code data available on cases of the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19 illness. The ZIP code information includes case numbers and number tested but not deaths or hospitalizations. Residents can look at data by ZIP code, locality and health district.
The health department says there are a few caveats to the ZIP code data. Locality data is being reported to the state for all cases, but ZIP code information is not reported for 432 of the total 22,342 cases. Out-of-state residents tested in Virginia are not counted in ZIP code data but are reflected in the state's overall testing data. For privacy reasons, ZIP codes with case counts between one and four cases are listed as "suppressed."

As of Friday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 22,342 cases of the new coronavirus and 812 deaths. That's an increase of 772 cases and 43 deaths since Thursday. Of the total cases, 21,274 are laboratory confirmed and 1,068 are probable, meaning a person has symptoms and known exposure to COVID-19.
The department reported 260 coronavirus outbreaks, defined as two or more laboratory-confirmed cases. These outbreaks account for 5,041 cases across the state. Long-term care facilities have 3,172 cases and 470 deaths tied to outbreaks. In the state's prison, there are 843 cases and two deaths.

The state has reported 3,059 cumulative hospitalizations, but more detailed data from the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association shows current hospitalizations rising. The number of currently hospitalized patients with confirmed or pending coronavirus test results totaled 1,625 on Friday, up from 1,613 Thursday and 1,496 Tuesday. There have been 2,997 COVID-19 patients discharged from hospitals, up from 2,825 Thursday and 2,617 Tuesday.
There are 378 patients with confirmed or pending test results in the intensive care unit, an increase of seven from Thursday. On Friday, 199 COVID-19 patients were using ventilators, down from 203 on Thursday. Among all hospital patients, there are 591 ventilators in use of the 2,935 available ventilators in hospitals, representing 20 percent use in Virginia. No Virginia hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining or replenishing personal protective equipment or other medical supplies.

According to state data, 128,877 unique people have been tested in Virginia, an increase of 6,758 from Thursday. Overall, 136,558 tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 6,662. The Virginia Department of Health started counting multiple tests individually on May 1. Before that date, a COVID-19 patient tested multiple times was counted once.
Gov. Ralph Northam's tentative date to start the first of three reopening phases for certain businesses and activities is Friday, May 15. Once the first phases of reopening begins, businesses could reopen with enhanced safety measures in place. Northam plans to outline detailed guidelines on reopening phases and restrictions at a news conference on Friday, May 8.
Northam anticipated the first phase lasting around three weeks before the state seeks to further ease restrictions on social gatherings. Phases two and three also will last about three weeks. The separate stay-at-home order is in effect through June 10.
