Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrew Wong Receives Congressional Badge of Bravery for Navy Yard Actions

Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrew Wong received the Congressional Badge of Bravery Tuesday for his heroic actions during the 2013 Navy Yard shooting, according to a news release from Congressman Gerry Connolly’s office.

The Washington Navy Yard shooting took place Sept. 16, 2013, when a lone gunman fatally shot 12 people and injured three others at the Washington Navy Yard in southeast Washington, D.C.

Here’s an account, from the news release, of Wong’s actions on the day of the shooting:

On the day of the shooting, Wong was among the initial responders on the scene. Wong moved into the building and began the process of clearing office spaces and escorting civilians out of the building. He later provided cover as Officers Carl Hiott and Dorian DeSantis found the deceased shooter. Wong, a Springfield resident, was presented with the award by Congressman Connolly (D-11th).

In 2008, Congress passed the Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery Act creating the Federal Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery and the State and Local Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery.

The act establishes an award to honor exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty by federal, state, and local law enforcement officers. The medals are awarded annually by the U.S. Attorney General and are presented by the recipients’ Congressional representatives.
