Bike to Work Day

On Friday, May 20, Kingstowne commuters have a great opportunity to ditch the traffic and congestion that they experience in their cars and ride their bikes to work on this official Bike to Work Day, sponsored by the Washington Area Bicyclists Association. It’s a great chance to get some fresh air, enjoy the network of bike trails in the area, meet fellow bicyclists, and make a difference reducing road congestion and air pollution, even if it is just for one day. Starting at 6 A.M., bicyclists will gather at the Springfield BTW pit stop, located on Walker Lane, in the gazebo right across the street from the INOVA Springfield Healthplex medical center. At the pit stop, members of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Com-merce will be serving health-conscious refreshments to bicyclists who are on their way to work. The pit stop is sponsored by Akridge Properties, the Virginia

Bike To Work Pit Stop Megaprojects, CALIBRE, TAGS, and Hilton Spring-field. Some bicyclists will go only as far as the Springfield-Franconia Metro station, while oth-ers will join a caravan of bicyclists to Old Town Alexandria, Crystal City, and into DC. Register for Bike to Work at www.waba.org, and the first 8,500 registered participants get a free Bike To Work T-shirt. Last year, over 9,200 bicyclists took part in the ride and this year promises to be bigger and bet-ter. Even if you don’t register, you are welcome to stop by the pit stop to talk bikes and enjoy the camaraderie.
