Fairfax County Schools Make Weather Decision On Jan. 28

A winter weather advisory starts Friday evening, impacting some activities at Fairfax County Public Schools.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — With winter weather in the forecast, Fairfax County Public Schools will cancel afternoon and evening activities Friday and before noon on Saturday.

The school district did not announce an early dismissal for the school day, but various other activities are canceled. The cancellations include extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses, Adult HS and GED and recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS. Activities scheduled after noon on Saturday will go on as scheduled. Virtual events are still scheduled for the weekend.

Fairfax County and other parts of the region are under a winter weather advisory from 4 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service expects 1 to 3 inches of snow with impacts to the Friday evening commute.

The Virginia Department of Transportation, which maintains most roads in Fairfax County, pretreated roads and will deploy trucks midday Friday to treat roads as needed. With temperatures expected to be below freezing in then next several days, VDOT urges drivers to use caution in areas that can be icy, particularly bridges, ramps, overpasses and elevated surfaces.
