KINGSTOWNE, VA — Halle Companies will discuss development proposals for two areas of Kingstowne at a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Snyder Center. The applications were submitted to Fairfax County this summer.

One of the projects involves revisions for a future mixed-use development in a lot near the Bonefish Grill at Kingstowne Towne Center. The county previously approved 800 multifamily residential units and 68,000 square feet of retail for the development. The revised plan would have up to 646 residential units and 11,400 square feet of retail. The plaza at the center would be upgraded to host events, seasonal splash pads and an ice rink.

Another proposed project involves redevelopment of the former Toys R Us store and current La-Z-Boy store across from Kingstowne Towne Center. The redevelopment plan includes up to 325 residential units. According to the Kingstonian Magazine, Halle aims at keeping the site "economically viable" with the residential component.

But while redevelopment planning is in the early stages, German-based grocery store chain Aldi is set to open a store in part of the closed Toys R Us location in Kingstowne, according to Washington Business Journal. Aldi took over the lease, and a building permit application went to the county in June. Whether or not that lease is renewed would impact plans for redevelopment, which calls for the Toys R Us/La-Z-Boy building to be demolished.
