Lincolnia Kitchen Fire Starts After Power Outage

Residents of the Lincolnia home never turned the stove off when the power went out, and it later caught fire.

LINCOLNIA, VA—A stove left on after a power outage started a fire at a Lincolnia house Friday.

Around 8 a.m., Fairfax County and Arlington County firefighters responded to the fire in the 3900 block of Fairfax Parkway. Smoke was showing from the front of the house, and firefighters located and put out the fire in the kitchen.

A resident woke up to the smell of smoke, and all occupants escaped. One of the residents suffered minor injuries and received treatment on scene. There were no other injuries. The two adults and two children living in the house are displaced and are receiving Red Cross assistance. Fire investigators say damages are around $62,500 and that the fire started in the kitchen. They determined food was on the stove with the burner on. The home's power went out, and the residents went to bed without turning the burner off. When the power turned back on, the food began heating and started the fire.

Investigators also found the home had a smoke alarm in the basement, but the battery wasn't installed.
