McClaren Takes Athlete of the Week Honors
Junior's late goal broke scoreless tie to give Hayfield field hockey its first win in the "Battle of the Birds" series
The second annual "Battle of the Birds" field hockey match between Hayfield and Edison looked destined for overtime. Then Hayfield junior Christina McClaren stepped up and netted the game's only goal.
Edison had won three games heading into the match and dominated possession throughout the second half. Still, the Hayfield defense held strong and needed just the McClaren tally to come out on top.
The goal came off a counterattack led by McClaren and fellow junior Laura Peterson. Hayfield's next game is Wednesday at Wakefield.
