Capital Beltway Crash: Woman Struck By Car

Update: A woman was struck by a car after she got out of her own car on the Capital Beltway in Alexandria.

(Updated 10:04 p.m.) KINGSTOWNE, VA—A woman died in a succession of two crashes on the Capital Beltway near Van Dorn Street in Alexandria.

The woman's car was struck when it was stopped in a lane for the first accident, WTOP reported. She got out of the car and was struck by a passing car in the second accident. She died on the scene. Another was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Virginia State Police told The Post the crashes were located near each other. One crash involved two vehicles, and the other involved the pedestrian being hit.

The accidents left drivers stuck on the Inner Loop Capital Beltway for hours after the accident was reported at 5:18 a.m. WTOP reported backups as far as Silver Spring, Md. All lanes were opened before 9 a.m.

The accident occurred near another Beltway crash over the weekend. Leonard Schultz, 52, a Vienna special education teacher and football coach, was killed when a box truck hit his car in Springfield. His nephew Albert Schultz was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

In other news, a number of Springfield area traffic lights had outages on Beulah Road, Backlick Road, the Fairfax County Parkway and Franconia Road. Fairfax County Police said around 10 a.m. the lights were restored.
