2-Alarm Fire Injures Firefighter At Newington Area McDonald's

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says the restaurant fire on Alban Road originated in a mulch bed.

NEWINGTON, VA — Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says a firefighter was injured while responding to a mulch fire that spread to a McDonald's in the Newington area Tuesday.

The fire department responded to the 8000 block of Alban Road around 2:46 p.m. Tuesday. While Fairfax County Fire and Rescue does not typically identify locations beyond the block address of fires, video from the scene shows the fire happened at a McDonald's restaurant.

Seven employees were present when the fire occurred. Employees had smelled smoke, and one discovered flames coming from the mulch bed. All employees safely evacuated.

Fire units encountered fire showing from the roof and requested a second alarm. Firefighters conducted an interior and exterior attack on the fire. One firefighter was injured during the response and went to the hospital for a check-up.

Fire investigators determined the fire originated in the mulch bed outside the building. The likely cause was improperly discarded smoking materials. Damages were estimated to be $85,000.

Both directions of Alban Road were shut down during the response.
