Names Of Officers Involved In Man's In-Custody Death Released

Fairfax County Police have identified the six officers on administrative restricted duty after a man died in police custody Tuesday, June 26 in Groveton.

The officers involved were: Sgt. Ronald Grecco, Officer Larry St. Clair, Officer Lindsey Memenza, Officer Scott Reever and Officer Shea Keaveny of the Franconia District Station and Officer Sydney Broderick of the Mount Vernon District Station.

Administrative and criminal investigations are underway, and a report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to be released.

Police responded to a call of an overdose in the 4300 block of Mission Court around 4:35 p.m. on June 26, but it turned out to be "something different," said Police Chief Ed Roessler at a press conference last week. Officers arrived to find a naked man potentially having a mental health crisis. A family member that made the call had been struck on the head.

Police tried to speak with the man, who was harming himself and fell on the floor. After police handcuffed him and restrained him to prevent him from further harming himself or others, medics assessed him. He became unresponsive, was given CPR and taken to the hospital.

Christopher Paul, 31, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police did not what medical emergency Paul had but confirmed no use of force was used and that he was unarmed. One of the officers was wearing a body camera that activated during the incident. Roessler said he will release the footage when it "no longer jeopardizes the integrity of the investigation."
