New Coronavirus Cases Stable In NoVA, Statewide Average Rises

Northern Virginia had 162 of the state's 1,002 new cases on Friday, according to health department data.

VIRGINIA — Virginia's coronavirus cases increased by 1,002 from Thursday to Friday as the 7-day average of new cases continues to rise. The latest cumulative totals are 75,433 cases, 7,087 hospitalizations and 2,013 deaths, according to Virginia Department of Health data.

The statewide average of new cases has been on the rise since July 7. The recent increase came after new cases decreased and stabilized in June. Virginia's peak 7-day average was 1,195 cases on May 31; the latest average was 929 cases on July 17.

That trend can vary by region, however. Virginia's 1,002 new cases include 162 in the Northern Virginia region, which accounts for about one-third of the state's population. The 7-day trend of new cases in Northern Virginia has been stable since declines in June. Fairfax County, the state's most populous locality, had 44 new cases on Friday.
