Northern Virginia Commutes: Long But Short in Distance

Average trips in Northern Virginia are under 10 miles but take more than 30 minutes.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Northern Virginia commuters already know traffic is bad, but data shows drivers are going some of the shortest distances but spend the most time behind the wheel in Virginia.

WTOP reported that the average travel distance in 2014 was less than 10 miles, which is not the case in most other metropolitan areas around the state. But the Northern Virginia area ends up being the only with average half hour or more commutes.

The data is part of the Department of Transportation's long-term planning process.
