PG County Cop Dies In I-395 Crash Near Springfield

The off-duty officer had a medical emergency when the crash happened.

SPRINGFIELD, VA—The Prince George's County Police Department confirmed one of its officers died in the fatal Tuesday crash on Interstate 395. Cpl. Kevin L. Brooks Sr., a 12-year veteran of the department, was off-duty and had a medical emergency when he crashed.

Police Chief Hank Stawinski and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 89 President John Teletchea sent this message to police officers:

To All of the Men and Women of the Prince George’s County Police Department,
It is with deep sadness that I inform all of you of the death of Corporal Kevin L. Brooks Sr. #3018. Corporal Brooks was off duty and had a medical emergency which led to a motor vehicle accident. Kevin was a 12 year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department assigned to District IV; where he spent his whole career. Please keep the Brooks family in your thoughts and prayers.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-395, north of Interstate 495 around 2:23 p.m. According to WTOP, Brooks was driving south when his car went off the road, struck a wall and hit another car. No other injuries were reported. Southbound lanes before Edsall Road were temporarily closed, while traffic was backed up for miles.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units, which responded to the crash, lined up along Interstate 66 from the Capital Beltway to Route 28, paying their respects as Brooks was transported from Fairfax Hospital to Manassas.

Virginia State Police continues to investigate the crash.
