A moped driver was killed Monday night after crashing into a car on Franconia Road, according to police.

Police were called Monday night just before 9:30 p.m. to the 6400 block of Franconia Road for the report of a crash involving a car and a moped. The rider of the 2009 Genuine “Buddy 150” moped, 56-year-old Peter Matthew Kester, was traveling west in the center lane of Franconia Road approaching Thornhill Court (see map), police said.

At the same time, a 23-year-old, female driver of a 2000 Toyota Camry, was traveling east on Franconia Road and attempted to make a U-turn near Thornhill Court, according to police. She apparently did not see the moped and turned in front of it, police said. Kester attempted to stop, but could not avoid striking the rear, passenger side of the Camry, police said. He was wearing a protective helmet and reflective vest.
