Springfield Crash Killing 2-Year Old Leads To Charges For Driver

A Woodbridge driver has been charged in the four-vehicle crash that killed an unrestrained child.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A July crash in Springfield that killed an unrestrained 2-year-old has prompted charges for the driver, according to Fairfax County Police.

The four-vehicle crash happened on Backlick Road near Barta Road around 10:40 a.m. on July 29. The driver of a 2007 Lincoln Town Car was heading north on Backlick Road with the child unrestrained sitting on his lap. At the Barta Road intersection, the car drifted toward the center median and struck a traffic signal pole. The vehicle continued into oncoming traffic, sideswiping a 2017 Ford F-150 then colliding head on with a 2019 Ford F-350. The F-350 then rolled backward into a 2018 Mercedes GLE 350.

The driver and child in the Lincoln Town Car and the driver of the F-350 were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The child died in the hospital on Aug. 11. The two drivers were treated and released from the hospital.

The Licoln Town Car driver, Jamaal Lowery, 41, of Woodbridge, was arrested last Thursday and was charged with child endangerment, reckless driving, and driving without a license. He was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond.

Police are not releasing information about the child, including the relationship between the child and the driver.
