Here are the top three stories today in Lynchburg:
- The Central Virginia Planning District Commission (CVPDC) has announced a grant award of $773,131 to create local affordable housing in Lynchburg. The funding, along with $450,000 awarded to Rush Homes in September 2022, was provided to Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity, the Town of Altavista, Amherst County Habitat for Humanity, and AHC Investments, LLC. The money will result in 47 new affordable residential units across the Central Virginia Planning District; each of the units will be made available to families with incomes at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). (Smith Mountain Eagle)
- Liberty University appointed a new president and chancellor on Friday. Dr. Dondi Costin will take over as the university's sixth president, whereas Pastor Jonathon Falwell will become the university's third chancellor. Both are set to transition into their new positions effective July. (WFXR)
- Lynchburg police are looking for two Stone Blue Hobbies shoppers wanted for credit card fraud. According to Jermiah Guelzo, the owner of the hobby shop, it all started when a man paid with a credit card over the phone for his 'sons' birthday gift and said that he would come in later that day to get the gift. Throughout the day, the shoppers came back and paid $3,500 worth of items with a fake card, and Guelzo did not notice until five days later. According to LPD, this pair faces felony charges, and anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call the Lynchburg Police Department. (ABC 13)
